Certior Capital focuses on emerging managers with new European private equity fund

HELSINKI – Certior Private Equity Fund I (CPEF I), a Finnish limited partnership, has recently held a final close supported by a group of Finnish institutional investors including pension funds, insurance companies, municipalities, family offices and endowments. It aims to build a high conviction portfolio of investments in European companies, in particular through backing emerging managers in their first or second institutional funds in the lower mid-market segment. The fund has been making commitments since first close in 2018 and is presently around 80% committed to 6 primary and 2 co-investments. Around 35% of the fund has been invested in some 35 companies across different European countries and industry sectors leaving the majority of the capital still be invested in the coming years. The program has been designed since inception as an “all weather” portfolio. It is on track against initial expectations and returns to investors at the end of last year had already moved into positive territory.

“Our private equity portfolios are consciously different to those of other managers. We invest opportunistically across Europe to achieve the best returns for our clients and we are not afraid to stray away from the pack”, comments Ari Jauho, the Chairman of Certior Capital. “We don’t like “hot” sectors where a lot of institutional capital is chasing limited deal supply and instead prefer first time funds and niche strategies who focus on value investing in resilient businesses which we believe offer outstanding prospects. Private equity today is a vastly different asset class to what it was when I started investing some 25 years ago. To find real value you have to look very carefully nowadays! While the current environment will undoubtedly be challenging in some ways, for those managers with capital it could well provide the opportunity for above average returns – exactly as happened in the years immediately following the Global Financial Crisis and the bursting of the internet bubble that preceded it”, he adds.
